Phanom Rung is the most imposing and important Khmer temple found in Thailand and was constructed in the Angkorian style between the 10th- and 13th-centuries.
Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the temple was built on top of a hill which symbolises Mount Kailish, a holy mountain on which Shiva traditionally resides. The complex is set in a scenic environment with great views over the surrounding rural landscape.
